If you are looking for an easy craft to do that is also budget-friendly, look no further. This DIY snuffle mat or kids rug is made using all Dollar Tree supplies. It is made the same way for either option and you can just use it however you need it.
I love how versatile this craft is. I called it a dog snuffle mat or kids rug but it can be used for other things as well. My cats actullay like to use it as a bed.
While this is an easy project, it can be a little time-consuming. But you don’t notice if you have some music or TV on in the background. You can even have the kiddos help you too!

How To Make A Snuffle Mat or Kids Rug
The first thing you need to do is start by cutting off stitched edge off all of the blankets.
Then fold the blankets in half evenly as you can. They will not be a perfect size. Cut the blanket into strips about 1 inch wide. It does not have to be exact just close to 1 inch.
After you have the blankets cut into strips. Cut those strips into about 9 inch long pieces. Again, it is ok if they are not perfectly all the same size as long as they are close.
If you are using multi colors, pick the color you want to start with. I started with the clouds. Then take a 9-inch strip and fold it in half. Push it through the backside of one of the holes on the outer edge of the mat. You should have what looks like a little loop sticking through the hole.
Take the ends of that strip piece and feed them through that loop end.
Pull those end pieces until the whole thing is nice and tight and attached to the mat.
Keep repeating these steps to start working your way around the mat. When all the way around move up to the next row of holes and do another few layers of this color before changing colors. You will have to skip a few places here and there as things will be a little too tight.
After you have 3-4 rows of the cloud color switch over to the hearts. And do the same thing with 3-4 rows with this fabric before switching back to the first color.
Then we did another few rows of clouds before finishing off the center with hearts. But feel free to do it how you want. You could do it all in one color if you wanted.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. Can this be made as a smaller snuffle mat?
A. Yes! You can still even make it from dollar store supplies too. They have a small sink mat that also works perfectly! You just do the same steps as you would with this one.
Q. Why use fleece as the fabric?
A. While you can use other fabrics, not all work as well. Fleece stays nice and fluffy and does not flatten easy keeping the dog busy looking for treats. Plus it does not pull apart easily. If you do choose to use another fabric, just be sure that is is not one that frays and leaves strings as you do not want the animal swallowing it.
Q. Can you make this into a larger snuffle mat or kids rug?
A. You sure can! You can buy a larger bath mat as a base or use Blank Rug Hooking Mesh.
