Homemade Flour Tortillas Made From Scratch
From Pantry Supplies
From time to time we need to have a no-spend week to save on our grocery budget or just want to get back to the roots of cooking. That is when it is handy to know how to cook from your pantry.
Tortillas are such an easy bread to make and are good to use for wraps, tacos, chips, with soup and so much more. That is why I am going to share my tried and true recipe for homemade flour tortillas.
Can You Use Substuitons If You Don’t Have Exact Items?
In short, yes you can.
While the flour to oil/fat need to stay the same as the base of a tortilla needs to have fat, you can use other types. With this recipe, we made it using coconut oil because that is what I had on hand that needed to be used.
But other oils/fats that you could use in its place would be butter, lard, shortening, oil (such as avocado, peanut, olive and so on). You can also use bacon grease too. One of the many reasons to save your bacon grease when you cook.
The baking powder you can leave out if you don’t have any. It is not needed for any of the flavors. The only reason it is used is to add a little extra fluff to the recipe. But it will cook just fine without.
As for flour, any basic all-purpose flour will work. It could be gluten-free, wheat and so on. If using things like almond flour I do think you would have to mix it as almond or coconut flour alone will not work.

How To Make Homemade Flour Tortillas:
Heat the water in the microwave. Then mix the oil into the water until it is all melted.
In a large mixing bowl add flour, salt, and baking powder and mix well.
Then pour the water-oil mixture over the flour. Using a fork mix it together well.
Then using your hands kneed the dough several times. It should look and feel like a big ball of playdough.
Next, divide that dough into 9 balls. Flatten each ball with your hand trying to keep it as round as you can.
On a clean suffice or plate add a light dusting of flour then place one of the flattened balls on top. Lightly dust the top of the ball with flour.
Then using a rolling pin (or a tortilla press if you have one) slowly start working around in a circle to flatten it out. You want to get it as thin as you can without ripping it.
Note: If you don’t have a rolling pin ore press, you can carefully use the side of a glass as a rolling pin.
After you have it flattened heat a no-stick or cast iron skillet on medium to high heat on the stove. Cook it about 40 to 60 seconds on each side. Repeat for each tortilla.
When you remove from the pan, place in a warmer or on a plate with a lid over it to keep them hot and moist do they don’t harden or dry.
How To Store Unused Tortillas:
If you are not going to use them all up you can store in an airtight container for a few days on the counter.
If you need to store them longer, wrap them well or put in an airtight container and store in the freezer.
Note, if you will be freezing them, consider freezing in small batches so you can pull them out as needed. Or you can also place them on a silicone mat on a cookie sheet so they are not touching to freeze them. After they are frozen then wrap them all together so you can just pull out one at a time.
