Fan Fix & Maintenance Tips

For some of us, summer is finally feeling like it is here. The sun bringing the much warmer temperatures has some of us running to find our fans and air conditioners. Maybe even having to do a little fan fix or do some maintenance before using them. Fans are usually a worthwhile investment of usually less than 50 dollars, depending on what kind you buy. The problem with the cheaper ones is the length of years you can get out of them now. They used to last for decades but now are much more cheaply built to force you to buy them more often. But you can help your fan last much longer with a little TLC. Below I will share a few tips on how to fan fix and do some basic maintenance on them.

One thing that is pretty fast is to dust the fan guards. A small broom or brush could make quite a difference is the performance too. A fan guard clogged up with hair will blow much less air than a clean one. You may see just a little dust on the guards, but you will be shocked at how much just a little dust can reduce the airflow. Another advantage of this quick tip to fan fix is it will keep the motor cooler. Dust builds up in the back and can make your fan overheat and die way before its time. If your fan can be plugged in outside, turn it on there and brush with a broom. You will see how fast and how much debris will be cleaned out of an otherwise clean looking fan. Again this step is recommended for only outside, with as much free space possible as you will be removing lots of dust and it will be spreading out quickly.

If your fan blades do not turn smoothly, you might need to add a little oil to the motor. Make sure your fan is unplugged for this. Just remove the guards, usually with a Phillips screwdriver, and fan blade if you are able and place 3 or 4 drops of 3 in one oil ( used on sewing machines) on the end of the fan shaft. If you spin it slightly with your fingers, you should see it begin to sink in and coat the inside. If you do not have this oil (pretty cheap to buy at places like Amazon), a couple drops of transmission oil will also do wonders.

By using these fast fan fix tips, keeping motor cool, shaft well oiled and the airflow clear you will add years to your fan. It is pretty amazing what just a little effort, and a few minutes of time can give you a fan that will perform for years instead of months.
