Summer is usually the time when people are out in their yards and on their decks and porches the most. Which means it’s the season when most people want to attract birds to have something pretty to look at outside! While attracting birds during the summer isn’t as difficult as during the winter, it still helps a lot to know some critical tips. Here’s how to attract birds to your yard this summer!
How To Attract Birds To Your Yard This Summer
1. Provide the Right Food
Despite being wild animals, birds are picky eaters. So if you want to attract birds to your yard this summer, you may want to take a second look at the bird seed you’re putting out for them. Is it just general “bird seed” or is it a “songbird mix” or “bluebird blend”? Different birds like different foods, including different seeds, suet, and mealworms! Put the wrong food out, and they won’t visit! Consider putting out a lot of different foods to attract the many different birds that are around during the summer. And don’t forget some nectar for the hummingbird feeders!
2. Use the Right Bird Feeder
Just as not every bird likes the same food, not every bird likes to eat from the same kind of feeder. If you’re trying to attract a particular type of bird, see if there are specialty feeders available for that species. For example, some types of clinging birds may like to pull their seeds through the mesh of a kind of “sock,” because they like being able to cling to the sock while they eat!
3. Provide Water
Like every other animal, birds get thirsty! On top of that, they like to wash and cool off in the water. If you don’t have one already, consider getting a bird bath and putting it somewhere they’ll easily find it, like near to a bird feeder. If you already have a bird bath, check that you keep it filled and that it’s clean. Birds also like the sound of running water, so consider adding a tiny fountain to your bird bath. Keeping the water moving will make it cleaner, and it’ll let birds hear that you’ve got a nice water source available!
4. Provide Homes
Did you know that a lot of birds like to build their nests during the summer? So if you want to attract birds to your yard this summer, you need to give them somewhere to nest! There are a large variety of birdhouses available, catering to the preferences of different species, and sometimes available in cute styles! Make sure that you put your bird houses up where birds can find them and where they’re safe from neighborhood cats. Also don’t put bird houses close together. Birds like their personal space!
5. Make Your Yard Appealing
Just as people like nice interior design, birds like nicely designed yards. In particular, birds like bright colors (they see in color). Different birds like different colors. Bluebirds are a little vain in that they like blue. And hummingbirds prefer bright red and pink colors. If you’re hoping to attract birds to your yard this summer, do some quick research on the birds you want to attract and see what their favorite colors are. Then plant flowers in those colors or put up yard decor in those colors and watch more birds stop by to admire your pretty yard!
