Do you have kids that are crazy over Minions? Here is a cute craft project to try. I will show you step by step how to make these DIY Minion inspired pencil topper. These even make cute little gifts.
DIY Minion Inspired Pencil Topper
This is a pretty easy craft to do. You just will need to know some basic sewing skills. Be even someone who has never sewed before can do this one. Get the supplies together and get ready to make this DIY Minion inspired pencil topper.
While I used two different colors to make this Minion, you could use yellow for both sides if you wanted. I just used tan so I could make a few and I had some extra tan felt on hand so just used it as the other color on the other side.
Below you will find all the steps to make this pencil topper as well as a PDF templet to use for the pieces. That way you can just print, trace and then cut.
Supplies Needed:
- Scissors
- Needle
- Thread (black, white and yellow)
- Marker
- Felt (different colors)
- PDF Templet
Minion Inspired Directions:
First thing you need to do is get the supplies together and print out the PDF templet. Or you can draw freehand if you want. Then trace the patterns on the selected felt colors then cut them out of the felt.
Next, grab the body base piece (this would be the yellow one if using two different colors) and the grey strip. Lay the grey strip on the yellow base pattern so that it is horizontally. Make sure it is near the top rounded end.
Now you want to grab the 3 different color circle cutouts. Put the small black circle on the medium white circle. Then put the medium one on the big grey circle. You should have something that looks like an eye.
Feel free to change it up so you have different ones looking different directions.
Grab all three pieces stacked together and place them in the middle of the grey strip that is laying on the base. Grab needle with white thread to stitch the eye in place. You just need one stick right through the three circles.
Adding Smile, Pants, And Back:
Now using the black thread stitch a smiley face below the eye. You can change up the smile if you want so you have different looks.
Lay the blue felt cutout on the yellow base. Line them up along the bottom straight ends.
Lay the yellow base on the brown base (or whatever color you are using for the backside).
Using the needle with yellow thread we need to stitch it all together. Keep the bottom end lined up and start to stitch from the side at the bottom and work your way up. You will be doing what is called a whipstitch.
Stitch all the way to the other bottom side. Tie the thread off and then cut off extra thread. Make sure you do not sew across the bottom. We need that area to stay open.
Insert your pen or pencil through the bottom area that is open. Now you have a cute new Minion pencil topper!
