Plants That You Can Plant One Time
And Eat From Forever
Have you been wanting to grow your own food? Now days more and more people are getting into growing their own food so that they will know what goes in their body. However some find it a pain to have to replant every year. Did you know that their are edible plants and even veggies that you can plant just one time and be able to eat from them forever??
Don’t get me wrong, I love my squash, tomatoes, peppers and other plants. But it is so nice to have a few plants that you can plant one time and eat from forever! Yes you will need to still do normal weeding, watering and caring for them. But at least you don’t have to worry about buying new plants/seeds and replant every year.
So you may be wondering what are the plants that you can plant one time and eat from forever? Well I have put together a short list of just a few to get you started.
Artichoke:
Artichoke is a strong taste but good vegetable. The edible part of the artichoke is the flower buds. You cut/pick the flower head before the flowers start to bloom.
Asparagus:
Asparagus is a yummy spring vegetable! It will have shoots that sprout out of the ground. You normally cut them off for harvest when they about 8 inches long or about as big around as your little finger. If you allow it to grow to large before harvesting, they will be tough. It is a nice veggie that is low calorie and is pretty low in sodium. You can eat it right from the garden or there are many recipes on ways to cook it. One I have found and love is this Asparagus With Butter Garlic Sauce. Plus you can always freeze or can it to have it later in the year.
Rhubarb:
Rhubarb can have a very tart taste. This vegetable is normally cut up into desserts with sugar to help cut the tartness. The part of the plant that is edible is the red tented stalks. They look a little like red celery.
Strawberries:
Strawberries have to be one of my favorite fruits! As you will find with many fruits, you can plant them one time and they will keep coming back year after year. You simply just pick the berries when they are nice and ripe red. You can eat fresh or turn them into jams and jellies to have for later. You can always wash and freeze them as well. Frozen berries work great for things like smoothies. You may also want to check out my recipe for a Strawberry And Pineapple Protein Smoothie.
I could go on and one about what plants that you can plant one time and eat from forever, but just thought I would keep it short. Do you have a favorite edible plant that is a perennial (comes back year after year)? Feel free to leave it in the comments!
