Frozen Water And Nickel Trick:
The first thing to do is grab a container that you can see through. For me, this was a water bottle. I did not want to use up dishes that I use all the time as this will stay in your freezer. Plus using a water bottle is a great way to keep it out of the trash.
When using a bottle, cut the top off. You want to have about 5 to 6 inches of the bottle left.
Now simply fill it so that is about an inch from the top. Place it in the freezer and allow it to fully freeze. After it is frozen place the nickel on the top of ice in the center and leave it in the freezer.
Now, whenever you open the freezer you will be able to tell if it has kept everything frozen. If the nickel is on top of the ice you are safe and the food has stayed frozen.
If the nickel is part the way down in the ice then it has stopped working for a little while and then came back on and you should still be safe to eat the food. Also if it is in water about half way down, the same thing applies just it has not been back on to refreeze.
BUT, if you open the freezer and see the nickel at the bottom of ice or water, you know it has been off for some time and you should TOSS all the food as it could make you sick.
Never would you think something as simple as water and a nickel could save your life!
