Oatmeal Container Project – Oatmeal Canisters Into A Kids Stool
Oatmeal is such a staple in our house. Not because it is a favorite food, but because it is so healthy for you. So we are always trying to figure out different things to do with an oatmeal container. One idea I came up with was to use oatmeal canisters to make a kids stool. It could also be an adult foot stool.
This oatmeal container project is not only a great way to reuse oatmeal canisters, you can use an old pillow case and cardboard too. I also try and stick with recycled filling when ever I need to get filling for my crafting projects. That way I can help out just a little more to keep stuff out of the landfill.
Oatmeal Container Project Supplies:
- 4 Large Oat Containers (you don’t need the lids)
- Hot Glue Gun & 3-4 Glue Sticks
- Scissors
- Iron
- Stuffing
- Duct Tape
- Piece Of Cardboard
- No Sew Tape
- 1 Pillow Case
The first thing you need to do is tape the empty oatmeal canisters together using the duct tape.
Next, place the taped containers inside the pillow case. Then carefully flip the whole thing over.
Using the hot glue gun, glue the bottom corners of the pillow case to the bottom of the oatmeal container. You are doing this just to keep it squared off so the corners don’t stick out from under the stool.
Now flip it back over. You want to cut the extra part of the pillow case off. Leave about an inch to inch and a half above the containers and cut the rest off. Be sure to stay as straight around as you can as you NEED the extra part of the pillow case to make the top.
Now you want to start to stuff between the pillow case and the oatmeal container. Try and keep it as smooth and even as you can so that it is not super lumpy.
After you are happy with how much you have it stuffed, you can glue it closed. Simply put some hot glue on the inside of the oatmeal canisters and then fold the pillow case over to glue it in place.
Making The Top:
Now, this next step is a little harder. First, you need to cut a flat piece of cardboard that is just slightly larger than the top of the containers. It needs to fit all the way across them as this will be the top of the stool.
Grab the extra part of the pillow case you cut off. Place the piece of cardboard in it. Cut off the extra on one side just so that it is about an inch past the cardboard.
Now turn it inside out. Place a piece of no sew tape down one of the open sides and iron it in place BETWEEN the two layers of fabric. Then do the same thing down another side. Then turn it inside right.
Put the cardboard back into it. At this point, it should look like a pillow case for the cardboard. Grab some stuffing and stuff one side of the piece of cardboard. Be sure to keep as even as you can. After stuffing, fold the ends of the case in slightly and iron a piece of no sew tape in place to close it.
Then the last step is just to glue the pillow to the top of the containers. Just be sure to put the flat non-stuffed side to the containers.
