Pie Iron Recipe For Camping – Pepperoni Grilled Cheese
Cooking with a pie iron recipe for camping can be a fun way to gather around the campfire. This recipe for pepperoni grilled cheese lets you enjoy that campfire taste and take care of your craving for pizza.
I don’t like to add the sauce to the sandwich as it makes it a little too liquidy for cooking in the pie iron. But I can’t go without that red sauce taste when I have pepperoni either. So I like to use it as a dipping sauce! Work great that way.
If you need to cook for a larger group, these could also be made on a cast iron pan or griddle over the fire.
Preheat The Iron & Tips:
Using a cast iron pie iron can sometimes be a little tricky. If you don’t preheat the iron things may stick to it a little more.
To preheat the iron you can hold it over the fire for a few minutes on each side. Or, if you have a grill over your fire you can lay the iron on it for a few minutes to heat it up. Just be sure your hands are sticking off.
You do have to be careful when putting your sandwich in the iron as it will be hot. I find it best to lay it on a wood picknick table or to bring a scrap board with me to use just for this.
You will also need to use the board for removing your sandwich from the iron as well.
Another thing you want to remember about cooking with a pie iron, is you have to treat it just as you do other cast iron. Meaning after you clean it, it needs to be dried and reoil right away.

How To Make This Pepperoni Grilled Cheese Pie Iron Recipe:
I like to pre-mix my butter at home and then pack it in an airtight container and toss it in the cooler. You could mix it at camp, it is just a little easier and faster this way.
Butter one side of two slices of bread using your garlic butter mixture. Then place one slice butter side down in your heated pie iron.
Add a slice of mozzarella on top of that slice. Then add four to five slices of pepperoni. Follow that with another slice of cheese.
Place the other slice of buttered bread on top of the cheese. Make sure the butter side is facing out so it will touch the pie iron.
Close the pie iron and hold it over the campfire for a total of about five minutes. You want to be sure to flip it a few times so that it cooks evenly on each side.
Carefully open it while to check and see if it is golden to your liking. If it is you can remove from fire. If not, cook for a little longer.
After you have removed the cooked pepperoni grilled cheese from the pie iron, serve with a side of red sauce. I like to use just a good spaghetti sauce for this.
