.Do you know how to do any air conditioner repair or even the maintenance that needs to be done to them? When you do your own, it can save you so much and a lot of it is super easy to do on your own.
Simple Air Conditioner Repair and Maintenance Tips
Heat and humidity are here! Something we all have to deal with each blazing summer. Some of us do not have much to keep ourselves cool other than a stiff breeze in the shade, but some others have fans and air conditioning.
But what about when it is not running correctly? Do you know how to do any air conditioner repair or even the maintenance that needs to be done to them? If the answer is no, do not worry, I am here to help you!
While air conditioning, is a great way to beat the heat, it isn’t without its maintenance. Just like any other machinery, it can get to be pretty inefficient, and then fail without warning.
But not to worry, there are ways that we can help out with air conditioner repair and maintenance, so our cooling machines whether they be window units or outside central air units keep running well.
Tips For Air Conditioner Repair and Maintenance:
Clean Filter:
One of the first rules of thumb is to keep the screen filter clean. If your unit is not working the best, chances are this will be an easy repair. Most can easily be removed from the front of your window unit with very little effort.
Some require you remove a small screw on the side, but most just pull out easily with just your fingers. You can clean it off with a small brush, or most of them can be rinsed off with water to get the small dust particles completely off.
Some window units have a reminder light that will come on when the filter should be checked. However, if you are a pet family, I have found that it needs to be checked more often then when that light goes off.
I would be sure to check it, at least every other week. The front of the unit too should be cleaned. The small openings leading to the filter can trap hair and dust particles. Again, a small brush, such as a dry paintbrush works really well.
Clear Grass & Weeds:
For those with the outside central air, one important thing is to keep grass and weeds out of your units. These can clog up the coils and make it work very hard to keep your house cool.
Some have weeds that grow like vines into the small openings. If you can do it safely, cut or pull out the foliage from these areas to keep airflow to a maximum. By doing that, you can avoid having to get air conditioner repair done.
If the debris is extremely heavy, a professional might need to be called to come out and steam clean it out. It’s worth it for the money you will save.
Try to face your mowers discharge chute away from the unit while cutting grass or trimming if possible.
Change Filter For Outdoor Units:
The furnace/ac filter must be changed regularly to keep it running at top speed and for the least amount of money. These filters are found inside the house, normally where the fresh air return is.
You should change these filters at least every 3 months. However, if you have a few months with heavy use or if you have lots of pets or are a smoker, you should change a little more often. That way you can make sure things stay running smoothly.
While you can’t always prevent premature failure in your cooling equipment, sometimes a little bit of effort and time can save you some money. And keep you running cool during the hot summer months.
By following these tips, you can do the little air conditioner repair and maintenance on your own. This will save you a lot of money.

My air conditioning unit has been acting up lately. Thanks for the advice about how you should keep grass and weeds away so that it doesn’t clog the coils. Another thing to consider is to get your unit inspected yearly by a professional.

Doing all you can DIY is a great way to save money and extend the life of your AC unit. Keep up the good work. If your older unit is not pulling it’s weight anymore, you might extend it’s life with a visit from an HVAC technician that uses AC-Renew to boost it. It’s a great new product on the market!

Thanks Todd! I will check out the AC-Renew if mine starts acting up, thank you.

I have been good about keeping plants from growing around my outdoor AC unit. However, I have also heard that it is a good idea to spray down the unit periodically to keep it clean. Is this something I should continue to do, or should I leave the cleaning to my AC repairman?

Hi James, it is ok to spray it off every now and again. Depending on the unit you have, just be careful not to use to much pressure on the coils/fins.
